A go abereka?

Checking Botswana's services…

Power, water, cellphone networks and government portals. Check here before you call, and tell everyone when something breaks.

Now
● quiet ● some reports ● many reports

Eish, what's acting up

"Many reports" only shows when two independent signals agree. One signal on its own shows "Possible problems", so a few angry posts can't flag a provider.

Lights out?

    Planned interruptions

      The Eish Wall

Say how it's going, anonymously. Tap a shout and it appears with your town only.

        Cellphone networks

Powered by the people on each network. When calls drop or data dies, report it and everyone in your town can see it's the network, not their phone.

        Reports by town, last hour

        Every service

Tap a service for its signals, 24-hour report history and contacts.

Every service also has its own page, for example Is BPC down?

Handy when the lights go. Bookmark it now.

🧊 How long will my food last?

Keep the fridge and freezer closed. A closed fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24.

🔌 Before the power comes back

Unplug TVs, computers and switch off the geyser so a power surge can't damage them. Leave one light on so you know when it's back.

        🔋 Save your phone battery

Turn on battery saver, lower the brightness and switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if you're on mobile data. Charge power banks whenever the power is on.

        💧 When the water stops

Keep a few full containers in the house. When water comes back, let the tap run for a minute first if it looks cloudy.

        --Mbps

Measures your speed to abereka's server, so it's a rough guide. Uses about 3 MB of data.

        How abereka works

        1. Website checks

Every few minutes we load each organisation's public homepage, the same way your browser does. We never log in. A slow or failed load only shows that page, not their whole service.

        2. Your reports

People report what's happening where they are. We count reports by area and compare them with what's normal.

        3. Two signals before "Many reports"

One signal shows "Possible problems". Only when both agree do we show "Many reports". Spotted a mistake? Tell us and we'll fix it within a day.
